Research finds egg yolks almost as bad as smoking

Newly published research led by Western’s Dr. David Spence shows that eating egg yolks accelerates atherosclerosis in a manner similar to smoking cigarettes.

Surveying more than 1200 patients, Spence found regular consumption of egg yolks is about two-thirds as bad as smoking when it comes to increased build-up of carotid plaque, a risk factor for stroke and heart attack. The research is published online in the journal Atherosclerosis.

Atherosclerosis, also called coronary artery disease, is a disorder of the arteries where plaques, aggravated by cholesterol, form on the inner arterial wall. Plaque rupture is the usual cause of most heart attacks and many strokes.

The study looked at data from 1,231 men and women, with a mean age of 61.5, who were patients attending vascular prevention clinics at London Health Sciences Centre’s University Hospital. Ultrasound was used to establish a measurement of total plaque area and questionnaires were filled out regarding their lifestyle and medications including pack-years of smoking (number of packs per day of cigarettes times the number of years), and the number of egg yolks consumed per week times the number of years consumed (egg yolk-years).

The researchers found carotid plaque area increased linearly with age after age 40, but increased exponentially with pack-years of smoking and egg yolk-years. In other words, compared to age, both tobacco smoking and egg yolk consumption accelerate atherosclerosis. The study also found those eating three or more yolks a week had significantly more plaque area than those who ate two or fewer yolks per week.

“The mantra ‘eggs can be part of a healthy diet for healthy people’ has confused the issue. It has been known for a long time that a high cholesterol intake increases the risk of cardiovascular events, and egg yolks have a very high cholesterol content. In diabetics, an egg a day increases coronary risk by two to five-fold,” said Spence, a professor of Neurology at Western’s Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry and the director of its Stroke Prevention and Atherosclerosis Research Centre at the Robarts Research Institute.

“What we have shown is that with aging, plaque builds up gradually in the arteries of Canadians, and egg yolks make it build up faster - about two-thirds as much as smoking. In the long haul, egg yolks are not okay for most Canadians.”

Spence added the effect of egg yolk consumption over time on increasing the amount of plaque in the arteries was independent of sex, cholesterol, blood pressure, smoking, body mass index and diabetes. And while he says more research should be done to take in possible confounders such as exercise and waist circumference, he stresses that regular consumption of egg yolk should be avoided by persons at risk of cardiovascular disease.

And next week there will be a study out claiming the opposite. Lets face it EVERYTHING is bad for you according to scientists/doctors, the best headline of this type I ever saw was BREATHING CAUSES CANCER, it noted that 100% of people who had developed cancer had a history of breathing, it was of course a spoof but I thought it was a good reminder of how out of hand these studies can get. The sample size on this one is very small at 1231 and as the study itself admits takes no account of the subjects excercise regimes and makes no mention of other dietary intake in addition to egg yolks.

or this; http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2011/07/110706093900.htm
or lots more on the same lines, if you google Eggs + Heart disease.

What could possibly be better than a lovely fresh home-laid egg for breakfast - no transfats, salt, sugar, additives, or other nasties, just lots of protein and extra Omega 3. Keep them coming, my darling girls!

We all die in the end Wrigley. Sure the Government wants to keep us healthy to reduce the Health burden and add to their Tax Revenue. But if you can't even eat eggs their isn't much left!

I agree totally! This is what I found after reading the previous article.

Back yard fresh eggs have;

1/3 less cholesteral, 1/4 less saturated fat, 2/3 more Vitamin A, 2X more omega 3 fatty acids, 3X more vitamin E, 7X more Beta carotene, as compared to commercial eggs.

I can't think of a better thing to die from ;)

if you don't have enough cholestrol your brain suffers as it's an important constituent of cell membranes. If you don't get enough from your diet the liver manufactures it. Most of these daft ideas about food have their origins across the pond ( with apologies to some forum members) where the whole agricultural system is different and people can be fined for growing vegetables in their backyard. :)11

It's all part of the campaign by the drug companies to have everyone taking statins - they may reduce death from certain causes but they don't prolong the life of those taking them as they die from "side effects". One of the most serious being muscle wastage - and what's the most important muscle in your body? :)

Your heart !!!

Eggs are nutritionally balanced as they also contain a substance which deals with cholestrol - but I'm having a senior moment and can't remember what it is.

As quoted elsewhere in this thread, other factors were not taken into consideration - how scientific is that?? A great deal of research these days is carried out to prove some statement or other and if some of the evidence disproves the statement it is ignored. Not much research is independent any more - if a drug company is paying, sorry sponsoring, the academic institution it is very difficult for researchers to publish what could be viewed as antagonistic papers.

Sorry to bang on but the lack of proper independent research bother me.

No mention of the origin of the chicken eggs or the age at which they were tested, as the vits break down rapidily which is why hatch rates are non-existant with old eggs which are still well within their 'use by' date.

If we take notice of all the things that supposed to be harmful,..it would be a poor poor existance..I would rather die at 65 and enjoy all the food I love, than to die at 90 of a miserable pasta eating life..

If you have the time have a look at this - the text, there's no need to watch the video.

http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2012/08/27/eating-eggs.aspx?e_cid=20120827_DNL_artNew_1

If you don't have time to read the whole article, here's a summary.

Story at-a-glance

A recent study claims eating egg yolks on a regular basis is approximately two-thirds as bad as smoking with regards to arterial plaque formation. But two of the study’s authors have vested interests in statin drugs, and the third helped create the vegan “Portfolio Diet,” which only allows egg substitutes
While it’s true that fats from animal sources contain cholesterol, this is not necessarily something that will harm you. Cholesterol is in every cell in your body, where it helps to produce cell membranes, hormones, vitamin D and bile acids that help you to digest fat
While organic pastured eggs are some of the healthiest foods you can eat, you’ll want to avoid omega-3 eggs, which typically come from chickens that are fed poor-quality sources of omega-3 fats that are already oxidized. You also want to eat your eggs raw, or lightly cooked, as cooking the egg will oxidize the cholesterol

I didn't have access to this when I wrote my post above, but her's the proof about drug companies vested interests. The main text says the 1200 people were stroke victims who were asked about egg consumption. If you have ever spoken to anyone who has had a stroke you will know they generllay have difficulty remembering things.

I rest my case!

Also, if they were all stroke victims, they were probably at risk from all sorts of other lifestyle or genetic things besides eating eggs!
