It's Saturday, 5:00pm and raining here in Rhode Island. The girls have been in the coop and run since about 8:00pm last night. I had just finished cutting up some grapes for their snack. I let them out and was immediately stampeded, they all knew what they were about to get. As the feeding frenzy started I noticed Gladys, one of our Black Sex-links was standing with her back to me all hunched over and puffed up. I thought she might be choking on a grape, they eat them so fast you'd think they were never fed. As I frantically sat the bowl of grapes down I looked up at her, she dropped her rear and laid this beautiful and very soft egg. That was truly one of the most amazing things I have ever seen!

Normally she lays early in the morning before 7:00 am and I'm almost positive that I saw her in one of the boxes this morning. Anyways, because this is a "shelless" egg, could this be a second one of the day? Or could their be something wrong? She has never laid a "soft egg" before.

Everyday I am amazed by them, they are always doing something that just makes me happy that I made the decision to start raising chickens. At first it was going to be just for eggs, now I'm happy they are all part of mine and my family's life. I am also thankful to have all of you "Chicken People" to share these new (at least for me their new) experiences. You guys are the BEST! Thank you!

Talk soon,

Wrigley

Stop worrying its perfectly normal for a young chicken that is just beginning to lay, they lay shell less
eggs, small eggs, mishapen eggs, wind eggs even large eggs, they will settle down its all new to them it may be natural but its still new. As an aside Wrigley what where you like when your wife was giving birth? :)

Could be a second egg dropped early because of the excitement Wrigley. They will drop eggs early if they are stressed or frightened but are far less prone to it in their second year.

I had a similar thing happen the other day. The bluebelle was sat on the henhouse roof, like you do, when the sussex squarked and flapped up beside her. The bluebelle didn't seem too surprised but popped out a soft rubbery egg. I take it this would have been the hard shelled egg due the following morning ? x
