I have recently got 6 chickens and on reading loads of books I gave them some sand to have a bath in. My lovely ladys eat it and not bath in it will this do them any harm  . Does anyone else have this problem?

Sand is not going to cause a problem unless it has additives in - I have heard that so called "builders sand" has a colouring in it and may not be so good if they eat a lot. Natural sand however should be fine.

I let mine use dirt and take dust baths in the garden. They have a few spots around the garden they like to bathe in. I'd be inclined to get a tray of dirt and let them bathe in that rather than sand. They can pick at that also :)

My chickens also have a grit bath that they use so it is not lack of grit  I have only used kiln dryed sand so no dye has been used as I did not want very orange chickens
