A couple videos of the first chick to hatch. I had eggs in the incubator but they have all been a fail. Not sure why but I think maybe the basic incubator I was using wasn't quite good enough, especially for the humidity levels. But Booboo (our black Pekin frizzle) has become broody and has been sat on a mixture of eggs (i.e. hers and the other hens). Since she has been our cockerel's favourite even though she's the smallest hen, it's no surprise that her eggs have hatched first. There were only two, and both hatched. She still has more unhatched, the other girls's eggs so there may yet be more. The only thing is that she had 6 eggs... And she still has 6 eggs!! So it would seem that she's added some freshly laid eggs to her brood! We've marked them now and will be keeping an eye, so that she gets out of this cycle properly.
I've taken the decision to remove the hatched chicks from the coop because we have an omlet coop (a caravan as i call it) and didn't to risk the chicks falling to their death. Also last year, one of the hens (the other frizzle) who never gets broody has been pretty nasty and killed 3 of the chicks. So I also wanted to avoid that.
Anyway the chicks are a cross between a black Pekin Frizzle and a New Hampshire Red.... Though at the moment they look more like their mum, complete with fine soft feathers on their feet and legs...
