A couple videos of the first chick to hatch. I had eggs in the incubator but they have all been a fail. Not sure why but I think maybe the basic incubator I was using wasn't quite good enough, especially for the humidity levels. But Booboo (our black Pekin frizzle) has become broody and has been sat on a mixture of eggs (i.e. hers and the other hens). Since she has been our cockerel's favourite even though she's the smallest hen, it's no surprise that her eggs have hatched first. There were only two, and both hatched. She still has more unhatched, the other girls's eggs so there may yet be more. The only thing is that she had 6 eggs... And she still has 6 eggs!! So it would seem that she's added some freshly laid eggs to her brood! We've marked them now and will be keeping an eye, so that she gets out of this cycle properly.

I've taken the decision to remove the hatched chicks from the coop because we have an omlet coop (a caravan as i call it) and didn't to risk the chicks falling to their death. Also last year, one of the hens (the other frizzle) who never gets broody has been pretty nasty and killed 3 of the chicks. So I also wanted to avoid that.

Anyway the chicks are a cross between a black Pekin Frizzle and a New Hampshire Red.... Though at the moment they look more like their mum, complete with fine soft feathers on their feet and legs...

Don't be mistaken,... It's only for a treat and a little exercise... To be fair at the moment both chicks are sleeping a lot so don't have much interest in a run lol

Ohhh how gorgeous and cute is that little chick, tweeting away.

You sound broody, Tweetypie....

Oh no, I have a broody feelings killer, namely the OH. He said we have the most expensive eggs in the world, the amount of food, equipment and time spent on them. I'm happy just looking at Sandrine's. Like babies, the chicks dont stay cute ?

Lol ? yes and he must ne the fastest chick I've seen so far.

Two weeks old now and they're growing fast! They can jump to the side of the box now so I'm having to put some chicken wire over the box when we're not watching them.

They could do with a bigger living space but they'll have to wait until they can go outside. Until then, I am just getting them outside when the weather permits for them to stretch their legs and see their mum and dad ☺️

Peep and Booboo are / were both broody again, and are sharing the sitting duties. We have been checking for chicks hatching everyday because I forgot to take a note of when they started and so didn't have clue when they would be coming,... Trouble is that they must have come in the night and we forgot to check this morning, so when I went to collect the fresh eggs, I found two chicks which looked like they had been crushed to death or smothered. This wouldn't be surprising because all 7 chickens insist on squeezing in the same nesting box at night. Another chick was in the run, also dead, but looked like this one had been pecked which also would not be surprising because Doris tends to attack chicks and growers... So very sad that these 3 did not make it, but at least I know next time I will check properly or at least take a note of when they started to be broody.
