Went to let the girls out this morning, looked to see if there may be any eggs, yes there was...1 broken on the floor under the perch. Somebody must have decided to lay her one from up high :)11 now we're hoping it's a one-off as they're young.

Yes - they sometimes get taken short, before they’re fully egg trained. At least you got to it before they found out how lovely broken eggs taste!

Even the most well trained hen gets caught short sometimes. I have had it happen a few times, most have survived intact, testimony to to the durability of eggshells. The one or two that were broken didn't lead to egg eating happily

I put a new hen in a coop and as she settled on the perch she dropped an egg - into my hand!

For those of you who have been on here a long time, it was the hen I had to chase around the field after I;d collected her and the cockerel!

No accidents on Tue night....the wife found an egg on the floor instead of the box when we went to feed the mixed corn for supper, and it was still warm, that one came in at 49 grams...fingers crossed for this morning.

I must have spoken too soon  another laid from the perch broken, but I finished up with a bacon & egg sandwich this morning....home-cured bacon along with last nights egg. ;) didn't have any home-baked bread I haven't had time this week it's been hectic.

Have you put something like a rubber egg, golf ball or even a hard boiled egg(marked, so you'll know it!) I the nest box, so they know where to lay?

Yes, we bought a pack of 4 rubber ones from the farm feed place, a funny thing yesterday afternoon the wife found one had been kicked out of the end box.... she had to drop it back in.
Because it's dark by 4.15 I have fixed a small bulb in the coop to encourage them to go inside as it gets dark, then they get locked in and the light out. Now this has had me thinking from when they go in they don't get much time before roosting, so last night I left the light on until about 6pm, thinking they may start to spend some time looking at the nest boxes and get the idea.

I'm going to do that for the next few weeks and see what happens.....I'm not into leaving the light on to force egg laying, just so they get to know the place where they should lay.. :)17
