Gizzard Impaction

We have just lost one of our Silver Campines to an impacted gizzard. Not the first time we have seen an impacted gizzard and usually you expect to find a lot of fibrous material that has caused the blockage but in this case when we cut it open it was just a brown mush with a few seeds, it looked like it had been there for a fair while. Apart from a distinct lack of grit in the gizzard there was no obvious reason why it stopped working. Grit is available and the bird in question had been trouble free for eight months in the same conditions. Any ideas?.

I think paralysis of the muscle is a thing due to an infection in tissues nearby but that is just an impression I get from reading around and when other apparent illness/infection seems to have brought the gut to a standstill.
