It is handy, but it can confuse American birds with English ones, I yelled out a bird was in the garden and OH replied no it's the Nuthatch
I've only downloaded the British birds onto my phone, so I wouldn't expect it to recognise any exotic escapees. What did you think you'd seen or heard?

Not being a techno-weenie how do I attach what someone else has said into this posting in order to respond to it?
Hi HenGen.
I've just clicked on "reply" directly under your post in this thread. You should see it include what you'd typed in quotes, followed by what I'm typing now? Give it a go & see what happens...

A friend took that pic in the Pyrenees. My mum has dementia so looking after her is a daily must, so no holidays. So OH is is still looking after animals, although she did get felled by a ewe the other day and has a badly bruised shoulder and a nice hoof print on it which the Dr said would make a great tattoo, and after she related the tale of woman V sheep he said that will be a whole chapter in the book he may write.

One good thing about a village surgery you phone up and they tell you to pop along. OH decide to phone them rather than go to A& E, she was pretty sure it was only ligaments torn. Which it is

Sorry to hear about your mum, BYM 😔. Hope Mrs BYM is soon on the mend & the ewe in the freezer... You're blessed to still have a village surgery at least. Ours closed down 18 months ago & the site is being covered with houses. I presume your neighbour is still in hospital or a home?

Neighbour is at home, she had carers for a while but can now look after herself reasonably well, cook meals, but there is no way she will get down to the animals. She can cope with letting the geese in and out. She is somewhat pig headed about things, takes after her dad

We are lucky with the village surgery, as they have a big practice in another town, so there is always a doctor or nurse to be at the village practice, which also has a pharmacy. Strangely all the doctors are Welsh, not quite sure why they have gravitated to this practice, in Essex.

My friend has had her local surgery close, she has to go 20 miles to the nearest one. madness isn't it, they get rid of a surgery and build houses, and people can't get a GP

The other current madness in East Kent is that they're planning to build thousands of houses on quality farmland (as fields don't pay council tax). Quite how they think this country will feed all of the people who move into these houses... 🤔 I suspect the truth is that they DON'T think.

If the war in Ukraine has taught us anything, it's that we can't assume that we'll be able to buy food from abroad whenever we need it.

Round here it is trying to turn all the farmland into solar farms, and battery storage areas. That is the argument they use for all this. All food can be imported is the answer we get. We also pointed out about Skylarks, Corn Buntings, Grey Partridge. But we need not worry they will put up nest boxes for them, as they know birds need nests in trees. o_O

Here is Galeon Andalucia 🇪🇸 sailing past Gravesend. a replica 17C trading Galleon. She now sails the seas as an education vessel.
She was certainly an impressive sight entering St Katherines Marina, she literally just fitted into the dock, only casualty a piece of wood from her starboard side, and a bent sign at front of lock. Some nervous faces from the flat windows as she was bobbing about waiting for the water to equalize.

As usual the St Kats marina staff did a wonderful job of getting her through the lock and berthed. few people were late home from work as all the swing bridges were raised to facilitate her passage in.

The tour around is well worth it, if she is ever at a port near you

You're so fortunate to be able to see thses things. The best I get is an occasion interesting engine through the station but either I hear about it too late or it clashes with an appointment. No photos, but I drove to Porthmadog and back on Friday with some friends - first long journey since the shoulder replacement. It was a memorial trip to scatter a friend's ashes at Tan-y-Bwlch on the Ffestiniog railway, in a lovely little memorial garden there. Great to travel across the Cob, just a pity it was too late to see any ospreys.

Yes, we are very lucky being able to get to the Thames fairly quickly, and the Port of London Authority publish a list of arrivals and departures, so we can plan ahead. Although sometimes their times and ships times ETA vary wildly. Marine Tracker is handy to. It takes a ship on average a couple of hours from the mouth of the river at Shoeburyness to get to Gravesend, an hour from London down.

Glad your shoulder is ok, and you could make the journey to scatter the ashes. A lovely place to scatter them.

Always next year for the Ospreys.

Here is Blue Mermaid a faithful replica of the same barge destroyed in WWII, she has no engine so is a lovely sight. She specialises in taking children who are carers on trips, and children with learning difficulties. Also moves cargo.

Other pic is Arthur Ransomes little ship Nancy Blackett, who features as "Goblin" in his book "We Didn't Mean to go to Sea"676 Blue Mermaid Tilbury 2024.JPGNancy Blackett.JPG

Did you manage to resize your pics Icemaiden from the info?

It's not all sailing ships, the other day the Greenpeace boat Arctic Sunrise paid London a visit. Nice and cheerful on a grey day.
