Good afternoon.
After losing 5 hens to my next door neighbours terrier being on my property I have 5 new girls arriving soon aged 10 weeks so I am hoping to give them a good start with a premium growers pellet. Any advice on the terrier problem would be appreciated too? The owner offered to pay for the hens! It is not about the money....

Hi laallee, - I’m sorry to hear about your chickens. Predator attacks are devastating, whether it’s foxes or dogs. Are your birds allowed to range in your garden? The only answer is to review your fencing, to ensure that the dog simply has no access to your garden. Maybe the owner might be willing to help with the cost of this?
Alternatively, like mine, they can live happily in a secure run, with a minimum of 2 sq. metres of floor space per bird.
I have a terrier as well, and I wouldn’t be happy if I thought there was any possibility that she could escape from our garden and maybe get stolen, run over or lost - let alone killing chickens. What’s the fencing like at present? Can you post pics?

Please don’t get any new pullets until this is properly sorted, or it’s bound to happen again. Any reputable brand of layers pellets will be fine for your girls, but none of them will do any good if they’re not safe and secure! Have a look at the Pests and Predators section, near the bottom of the Home page, for more help - you’re not alone!
