Hi I am new to this forum but am hoping to pick your brains as the year goes on. I have around 200 chickens but last year tried my hand at half a dozen bronze cross turkeys that altho went ok just didnt quite make the size etc i was looking for.

This year i plan to grow 30 turkeys and would like your advice when the best date is to have day olds in so as to make good birds for christmas. Was thinking of 10 White, 10 bronze, 10 black

Thanks in advance

Hi Chris, the answer to this question is much more complicated than you might expect. It would be difficult to say how long a poult would take to get up to weight by it's colour. There are many different strains of the colours you mention and some will grow faster and have different conformations. The broad breasted commercial strains will be faster growing but their rate of weight gain will depend on what they are fed and how they are reared. A farmer in our village used to rear commercial broad breasted white. He bought them in in august as day olds but kept them in sheds on 24 hours of artificial light and fed them a high protein turkey ration. We, on the other hand, rear standard turkeys of various colours, and if hatched in May and fed a variable diet on free range, will be good to eat at say, 26 weeks of age, about right for Christmas. They are totally different, as you can imagine. Kelly turkeys have commercial strains of all three colours you mention, and several different strains of bronze and white. They produce tables to show growth rates and final weights of the different types if fed a commercial ration.
