    Ultimate mouse trap

The cats used to bring in wood mice in Yorkshire and then let them go. OH chased them round with the mouse jar - a Hartley's jam jar which has a wider base than top. We don't seem to have mice here, had a couple of shrews, that's it. Not seen owls or hen harriers either, just our female...

    Cheery Pics

We have two bins, organic items and non-recyclable items. Glass and plastic bottles go in bottle banks dotted around the island.

Unfortunately I've hurt my foot so limping and hobbling so still no photos, sorry.

    Dog Dead

So sorry. You don't get that special relationship very often but we live a lot longer than them so it's possible.

    Morehens disease!

Our new girls are doing quite well despite the foul weather we've had recently. They all seem to fit into the Eglu and the younger birds seem to get on with Izzie very well. They watch Izzie to see what she eats then taste it. Andy put some rice out the other day but the youngsters wouldn't...

    Morehens disease!

It's been really foul weather this week, Marigold, so haven't been out to get any pics. The wee girls are doing well and our old lass Izzie is mothering them.

    Morehens disease!

I can't fathom out how this new forum works. I have my new hens now, cream legbar (Lexie) who OH calls the punk-rocker, the Sussex (Skerry) and the little Cheshire blue (Ailais, Alice) I'll post some pics when/ if I work out how.

    Morehens disease!

Well, our lovely Sussex, Skye, died just after I posted last so we just have Bluebell Izzie now. She is to receive three new friends tomorrow, a cream legbar, a cheshire blue and a white leghorn. Note no Oxford comma! I'll post some pics when I get some.

    Cheery Pics

You don't have enough water in England to frack - it requires millions of gallons, regardless of whether fracking contaminates the groundwater.

    Morehens disease!

My two remaining hens have stopped laying. Izzie (Bluebell) and Skye (Sussex) came to us on 1 October 2019, so are 3+ years old. They have been terrific egg producers in that time, but I don't want to start buying eggs again so I need to buy a new hen. We have an Eglu Classic and 3 hens fit, 4...

    Thin-shelled egg

One of our hens (Izzie, the Bluebell) laid an egg with a shell so thin that it cracked when OH picked it up. This is the first occurrence of this and her previous egg (2 days ago) was normal. We only give them oyster shell occasionally because they normally free range and I think get plenty...

    Feather pecking

Our girls have been banged up for several weeks now which they seemed to take to with no problems. Yesterday OH saw Morag, our cuckoo Marans, who is the boldest of the trio, swipe a feather from Skye's bum and eat it. She's been at it again today and the other two run away from her, as far as...

    Flubenvet layers pellets

I have bought a 5 kg bag of pellets which as you know have a limited life as a wormer. If I have any left over after the worming week would it be OK to mix the remainder with their usual food to save wasting them?

    Bamboo Loo Roll

OH has just bought a box of loo paper manufactured by a company called Who Gives a Cr*p - Australian as you'd probably guessed. https://au.whogivesacrap.org I am quite impressed -it is quite soft and strong, and double the usual loo roll length. The rolls are individually wrapped in pretty...

Making a dust bath for the girls

I realise that normally the hens would make their own, but the family that had this house before us put weed-proof matting all over the front garden. Great! No thistles or other nasty weeds but of course the hens can't scratch. Neither can the cats so they go in the back garden. I have seen...
