    Thoughts on my next flock

Great position to be in. I wish I’d known years ago how good Exchequer Leghorns are. Lay fantastically, beautiful and disease resistant.

    Firing Blanks

Oh dear. I misjudged him terribly. The eggs were very cold when they went in the incubator so I guess they had to warm through before incubation started. So two days late a mass of chicks. Three clear, four dead in shell and 28 chicks. Their mothers are three different breeds so we’ll see how...

    Perches

Terrible memory. What do they call that timber for perches. It’s about 3 ins x 2ins and has chamfered edges?

    Firing Blanks

A whole incubator of eggs (35) and all infertile. Guess that Mottled Orpington cockerel isn’t up to the job. Oh well Exchequer Leghorns gone in so it will be a late season for hatching this year.

    Cheery Pics

Traditional food here is rooted in the extreme poverty of bygone times and generally involves salt and oatmeal in various combinations. However seafood is abundant and modern freezers means it can be stored easily. So mackerel, crabs, mussels, lobsters all good and as an occasional treat...

Nope. Don’t know Shrewsbury biscuits either. I fact my knowledge of regional biscuitry is sadly lacking. But I do know that plain, unchocolated Hob-Nobs are the best dunkers in the world.

Is it me, or is the "new posts" button broken?

Sorry to be tedious but my health is fine apart from the normal minor problems of old age. Epilepsy controlled by drugs so alls dandy. Great skua population crashed by 90% as a result of bird flu and being top predator all else has bred very well. Of course the RSPB won’t have it that theres any...

Tip for poo picking in freezing weather

Thank you guys. I have to admit that as I trudged through 8 inches of snow the thought crossed my mind “ what am I doing here”. But then I laugh at such pathetic wimpishness and get on with it. The guy I referred to earlier is also the island road clearer/ gritter and he’s had his time utilised...

Tip for drinkers in freezing weather

Well that sounds sensible. I’ll do that one. Second problem is snow on the roof lights. I reckon as domesticated jungle fowl they’re used to moving about in Stygian gloom. Nevertheless it’s all due to be over on Sunday. Walking about in 8 inches of snow is very tiring.

    Storms

Castleton in Derbyshire is where I lived before moving up here. Clips on YouTube are now showing how bad the floods were there. I can only feel sorry for all the people who have lost all their furniture and houses inundated with mud. We as a society really have to face up to the effects of...
