OH and the farmer who owns the field opposite us, have half a dozen feeders along the hedge on the field side. They get filled every evening, the farmer provides the seed and OH fills them his actual farm is up the next lane. They got filled last night, OH goes out to fill them about 4.30 this evening, everyone has been stolen, what goes through people minds, you do wonder.

Some people will nick anything that isn't nailed down and sometimes if it is ...

And some people who are poor feel that this gives them the right to nick other people stuff.
I heard yesterday that the NHS has a vast number of outstanding claims for negligence. If, for example, I tripped over a paving slab on a hospital walkway I would feel an idiot for not looking where I was going. The thought of suing the NHS would be ridiculous.

Unfortunately, the whole world has gone mad with compensation claims on anything they can think of to make a buck! Its shocking. If the farmer had caught the culprit and slapped him, he would probably have ended up in court for assault, the culprit would probably claim compensation for stress and anxiety and the farmer would end up having to pay out. That's today's society. The legal system is bent IMO.

But maybe not if the paving slab was sticking up, you broke your arm and either lost money at work or had to pay for someone to come in and help you at home.
I thought most of those claims were for "medical" negligence - our local Health authority is in special measures because of appalling maternity care.

Who was being fed from the feeders BYM? Presumably they were fairly easily portable ...

When people see things "left" in fields they often think they don't belong to anyone because they've been abandoned or dumped. FArmes used to be able to leave large implements even tractors in the fields overnight but now they risk having them nicked.

Well no actually. If I tripped over a protruding paving slab I would put it down to my own negligence. If a chimney pot fell off and split my head open then I probably would seek compensation.
You are correct though that most claims are for medical negligence. Three were on the news today. None of them were down to actions taken that were harmful. All three were down to doctors not spotting a harmful condition. Devastating though that is for the parents doctors are not gods. All of us are fallible.

Last year, there was a big political stink here about ridiculous claims. One of our TD's (equivalent of your Mp's), fell off a swing in a hotel. The swings are sort of photo props, it seems. So you can sit on the swing, and, well, look like you are just having great fun, I suppose. Anyway, reports said she had had a couple of drinkies, and was holding a bottle of beer, as she sat on the swing. And she fell off, and was hurt. So, even though Insurance fraud, and "compo culture" here is all over the news, she sues the hotel because nobody was supervising the use of the swings, and there were no instructional signs near them.
She was, literally, laughed out of office!

They were old feeders which we had to exchange for squirrel proof ones when squirrels started coming a calling. They were just hooked on tree branches for ease of taking down and filling. 100 + House Sparrows have been counted in the trees and hedge, 16 Yellowhammer, 12 Chaffinch Reed Buntings, Bramblings, plus the usual members of the Tit family, that was last weeks count. Few yellow necked mice have been seen under the feeder.
We are assuming it was someone who pulled in to the entrance to get directions somewhere from their phone or nipped behind the hedge for a wee. We are taking them in at night at the moment
Talking of compensation, OH slipped over once dancing and badly sprained her ankle. She limped down to the town heavily bandaged and was hounded around the shopping centre by one of these claim firms who had a stall in there. She pointed out she wasn't interested as it was her own fault to be told " it is always someone else's fault, and the floor must have been wet or faulty" She just walked off. She now wonders what they would say if she said she fell over one of her own hens.
