Pekin with eye infection?

Post by lonicera56 » Thu Aug 06, 2009 4:27 pm

One of my older Pekins appears to have slightly swollen eyes which have a bubbly film on them. I have bathed them with warm water, and assume she must have some sort of eye infection. Apart from being slightly pale she is otherwise ok & still has a good appetite. Have checked for all the usual nasties (mites, fleas etc) that might be upsetting her, but wonder what might be the cause & what else I can do to help. Maybe she has caught a cold with all this wet weather. Any advise please?

Hi lonicera, I'm far from an authority, but did a bit of research, via the wonders of the net, (googles chicken eye infection) the general findings are that it's conjunctivitis which apparently is comonly associated with respiratory infection, tb, etc. Antibiotics seem to be the course of action, once the issue is confirmed as respiratory, ie do the birds have a rattle to their breathing. Hope that is of help, but like I say I'm far from an authority. Try googling like I did and I found on piece where the keeper described a very similar condition to that of your bird, (bubbly liquid from eyes). Hope you get to the bottom of it and get it sorted. Let us know how you get on, as it's allways usefull to have info like this for referance. Cheers, matt

I did google & found varying suggestions, which is why I posted as I was hoping that it wasn't as bad as some sites suggested.
I am using Golden Eye Drops on her, and have made a mix of AVC & garlic as suggested in one of the articles on this site, and have separated her from the others - although she doesn't like it. She is sneezing a bit too, but when I hold her to my ear, all I can hear is her heart beating - no rattling or wheezing, so I am hoping with all my might, that it's nothing worse than a cold. She seems otherwise fit & healthy & foraging & making escape attempts at every opportunity!. Tylan was suggested by someone on another site, but it's prescription only & the vets is closed unless I use their emergency service. I presume all antibiotics are prescription only? I am watching & waiting to see how she continues.
