Help I think my chicken is dying

Post by Princess » Wed Jul 08, 2009 1:58 pm

yesterday my chicken was sat down in the same spot from the morning until the afternoon when I got home from work. I examined her and she tried to walk off but was limping really badly. She just wanted to sit and sleep. I put her in to the house and when I got home from work today she was still in the same place and was really dehydrated. ive given her some water, but she doesnt seem to want to do anything other than sit and sleep. if I put her somewhere she would just stay there until I moved her and she is not aware of anything around her. It also looks like one side of her has dropped. What shall i do is she going to die??

not being a vet or anything i had a chook that had the same symptonms and she ended up being egg bound, there is some articles on here explaining on how you can steam the vent area or use olive oil, unfortunately neither worked for me and i had to have her dispatched by a friend, search the articles for egg bound and you should find some useful info

Dear Princess
If you aren't sure, and there's no one experienced there, I think it would be best to take her to a vet. Good luck, and I hope she's OK.

Yes, could be many things - from the description, she probably won't last long at this stage.

The only thing I can recommend like Venessa is the vet but it doesn't sound good. :(

Hi All

Thanks for your replies unfortunatelly Wally (the chicken) passed away this afternoon. She just started shaking like she was having a fit and then it was all over RIP

I'd love to know what caused her death but could not bring myself to do a necroscopy.

Thanks again

Oh I'm really sorry, it's not very nice when you lose a chook.

Looking forward... it's not a bad idea to check your other girls over to make sure they are ok - and check for the common nasties like worms, lice, Red mites (in the house - loads around at the moment with the warmer weather  ). I've found some in one of my houses and I'm cleaning / spraying every night yet I'm still finding the little buggers every night on the ends of the perches. Poultryshield are making a fortune out of me! Red mite are so hard to eliminate completely once they are established. I'm going to wash the house out on the weekend and use the high pressure hose on every crack before dusting the bedding and perches with red mite powder and diatom.

Chickens do sometimes catch something that you can't identify and die quite quickly though.

Anyway, I am sorry to hear you lost your chicken.
