Baby quail hatched today!

Post by Marigold » Sun Feb 05, 2012 8:54 pm

Woke up this morning to find this little chap, wondering if he was the only baby quail chick in the world!

Quick dash down to the hens, and then this one appeared;

Numbers 3 and 4 were shared with the grandchildren mid-morning, via Facetime.

After lunch, the first 4 set to and 'helped' number 5 into the world; (he's OK, don't worry!)

Number 6 was having real problems, so I helped him a bit. Hope he's going to make it. Have switched off the light so they can all rest overnight and No. 6 won't get bullied until he's dry and feeling stronger.

So, 6 out 0f 12 so far - not too bad, for a first go, with e-bay eggs sent through the post in January. What a wonderful day!

Seventh 'child' hatched overnight, possibly one or two more to come. All very active in the brooder, driving the dog mad with their cheeping on the landing. They are so tiny! Took a bit of video with a 3.5 inch square ruler, to give scale. The two 'Easter chicks' posed nicely on it so you can see how little they are. Yes, I know I should hold the camera the other way up next time, but didn't want to remove the heat lamp again to have another go.
