Still haven't creocoted the coop. The weather has been truly awful all year, the box holding the coop disintegrated and the coop got saturated so it needed to dry out before I do it. Now we're forecast snow - and next month I've got to have an operation so it won't get done this year. Oh well! Next spring, maybe.

I've chosen the breeds of chooks I want, just three at first: Cream Legbar, Cuckoo Marans, White Leghorn. Any comments?

Hi Diane, nice to see you back again. Those three breeds will give you a variety of colours for eggs - blue, brown and white - so you'll know who has laid that day (when the great day finally DOES come for you!)
Good luck with the op - at least you won't have to worry about who is looking after the hens.

Hi Marigold, thanks for the good wishes. You're right - it would have been one more thing to worry about.

Glad you approve of my choices - my thoughts entirely about who laid what.

Well, I'm back, if anyone remembers me. A lot has happened in the last few years and we now live on the Isle of Lewis and hens are now imminent! I have an Eglu Classic and my hens arrive on 1 October. Not the best time of year but I had to order them from Donald MacDonald,' the hen man of Skye' and Oct is when they are ready. There will be a Bluebell, a cuckoo Marans and a Light Sussex - all hybrids after all. Just have to stop the Eglu blowing away now. :)

Welcome back, Diane!
HenGen, who lives on Fetlar in the Shetlands, will be interested to have another island-dweller on board. October is good - if they're POL they may start laying this year, depending on age, but if they wait until the New Year they'll be good strong girls ready to really get going. I hope they won't get seasick if D. McD. doesn't actually live on Lewis. Please let us know how you get on.

Thank you, Marigold. Donald and the hens are from Skye - I hope they have a good crossing. I'll try to post some pics when they're here.

Amazingly, my account hadn't been deleted after all this time! I had to get a new password but then I was in and just looked up my posts.

I never did get round to having hens in Yorkshire. What with operations and injury It never seemed the right time. I gave away the coop to a young couple who liked it - we could't have brought it with us anyway. Hence the Eglu now. I know many people don't like them but I liked the idea that it all comes apart for cleaning and I can just hose it down. Just the size for 3 hens, too. We'll see how we go. No predators on the island unless a golden eagle fancies a snack :D so the hens can free range all day.
