The secret's out!

Post by Tweetypie » Sat Jun 30, 2018 9:03 pm

So it has been a week and I have done well not to say a dicky bird :-) I purchased a Blue Belle hybrid (Maran X RIW x Barred Plymouth Rock) and a Black Rock hybrid (RIR x Barred Plymouth Rock), kept them apart 7 days.

Barbie and Cindy were not amused and there was a lot of shouting from the former. On day 3 it calmed down. For the past two days I have let them all out together. Barbie is the underdog, next is Cindy. Despite being old birds, they are smaller and the younger ones more dominant, although there has been very little pecking, only at feed times and again, minimal.

They have separate accommodation at night. I will have to let them organise this themselves over a long period methinks. I don't want to upset my ex batt's.

The newbies are... Mabel and Miss Muffet (the grey one). 26 weeks old. Mabel is a very inquisitive hen. She follows the others. Miss Muffet is more introvert and a little nervous around humans and is happy being alone, too. She has laid 2 eggs this week. Mabel laid one softish shell egg this week.

The seller 's family has been showing hens for 120 years, so a few generations.

Here's Mabel and Miss Muffet

Really lovely. It sounds like you pitched the balance between the characters just right there (interesting with recent comments on Bluebell temperament.) Having the space to let them get used to each other too.
Someone should write a book on the 'Alchemy of Chickens'

Excellent! Well done. I love the photobomber in the first pic!
Lead me not into temptation. I can find the way myself!
