The Lakenvelder breed

Post by Tweetypie » Thu Jun 14, 2018 8:59 pm

I went to the home and garden show at the NEC in Birmingham today. I was surprised to see the British Hen Welfare Trust there and a couple of other stands. There were a few ex battery hens in a pen and some other pens with different breeds. One breed was very small. The cockerel looked like a typical comic rooster, but a tiny version of it. What took my eye, but the photo's didn't come out, was a breed I have never heard of The Lakenvelder. What a beautiful looking hen and cockerel.

Beautiful indeed. They remind me of the herd of Galloway cattle on a nearby farm, with their broad white stripes round their bellies and backs, and black shoulders, heads and rear ends.
I've just looked up Lakenvelders and it seems there are indeed Lakenvelder cattle as well as poultry, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lakenvelder_cattle
and poultry; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lakenvelder
Something I've learned today. Glad you enjoyed your day at the show.

It was a lovely day out as they had food exhibitors there, too, so I was snacking on cheese, dipping oils, fudge, crisps, then a hog roast. I actually went to see all the flowers and plants.....but forget Monty Don's speech....I was more interested in picking up the yellow chicks and looking at the hens.
I also looked up that breed. They are meant to be lively, but these three looked quite docile. Probably used to people gawping...
Yes, it was a good day, I am making the most of my time off, until I return to work...
