Hen party photo

Post by Tweetypie » Sun Jul 08, 2018 10:54 am

Just thought I would add a photo of the girls, taken from the conservatory window yesterday. These hens have brought me so much pleasure, with their daft antics and funny personalities.

Left to right: Barbie, Miss Muffet, Cindy and Mabel.

"Don't see any food though"

Smart looking birds. Because my hens run with cockerels they look a bit radged at this time of year. A cockerel always has a favourite hen too which invariably has a bald patch where his feet go at mating time.
My growers which are now 14 weeks do look smart and well groomed. Hatched a pair of Barnvevelders for a neighbour who keeps this variety and who wanted an unrelated cockerel. These are really attractive at fourteen weeks but not for me. Also got four Cream Legbar pullets for another neighbour. And for myself, four Dominiques of my own breeding and two Lavender Araucanas for cross breeding.
Although results are variable I couldn't do what I do without ebays sale of hatching eggs.

I must admit that Barbie (far left) is looking a bedraggled of late, a bit like a bad hairdo after a rough night :-) I think she is moulting, although this is the first time I have owned hens, so not sure. She's laying every day and happy and chirpy, so I am putting it down to this weather. Thank goodness it's cooling down a bit.
