Here's a new thread, to counterbalance the one about human stupidity. This lad was lucky the mobile phone had reception, in a dark mountain area with his injured mum. What a dilemma for the father, left looking after the other two little children, whilst his son tried to help.

I read that this afternoon, such a brave boy, but had I been his Father, I don't know if I would have let him go down the mountain, I would have probably gotten him to look after the other two...such a dilemma for him, but one which had a positive outcome, thank goodness. I guess one never knows how one would react until faced with a situation like that.

Steward, not judge. Yes it went fine. It was good seeing a three legged dog working. And one that was so useless that someone’s pet Lhasa Apso could have bettered it.
But the standard among the better competitors was high and the winner was almost faultless.
Enjoyed the article because before moving here I lived for 25 years in Castleton which is just over the ridge from Edale. And as a young man I used to grouse beat on the moors. Certainly walked a lot on Kinder Scout which is a huge area of peat and blanket bog. No place for man nor sheep.
 
That story could have ended very badly. at least the young lad kept a cool head. Well done to mountain rescue who freely give their time to rescue man and beast.
Glad your stewarding went well, a three legged working dog, that's a first. the useless one reminded me of a neighbour who replaced an ageing sheepdog with a young Border Collie who's idea was to round people up rather than sheep, it was brilliant at that, totally useless with sheep, it was hilarious

I had a collie x pup for about three weeks a few years ago. This trying to herd me drove me nuts. He was also trying to herd any other animals he met, and their owners! Such a very intelligent dog, I returned him to the rescue, because I was utterly exhausted, and he was bored with just one middle aged lady for company. I could see he needed a family and preferably another dog for company. And that's what he got! My son in law came across him one day when doing work for a family. :)
 
My friends dog was the same, getting through the gate was an expedition as it constantly rounded you up. She went back to the farm where she came from and is still there, as the children's dog rather than working

Boy doesn't she just. Christmas shopping going well here. OH farming friends are all getting Owl or Kestrel boxes kindly delivered from the Barn Owl Centre in Gloucester, so no searching around shops. We are doing well for Owls and Kestrels around here so everyone is keen to assist them in every way. Mrs & Mrs Tawny Owl here are very vocal at moment.
 
Christmas shopping going well here too. More or less done. I do hampers of food for my brothers and dau's family, including home made cake & pudding, home made relishes, and jams or lemon curd, crackers and cheeses/pate (not home made!) and some home made fudge, chocolates, etc.
 
Wow! An expensive time for you guys. A romantic card for the nearest and dearest is as far as it goes in my world.
But we do have a community lunch on January 11th which includes a lucky dip Secret Santa. (It’s an Old Yule Gregorian calendar thing) My three gifts this year are:-
A coffee mug with a picture of a pubic louse on it
A book from Amazon entitled ‘How not to be a Walking Pile of Shit’
and
A life of Jesus colouring book.

But curiously the fact that I have a stock of good gins and tonic at this time of year seems to make me suddenly popular.
And no First Footing here. I did enquire about this a few years back and was firmly told “we’re Vikings not Scots”.

Nearly forgot. The riotous Fire Festival at the end of January called Up Helly Aa. The schools close, the shops shut, all public transport ceases and Boots stocks vast quantities of hangover cures for the following day.
 
Always fancied watching Up Helly Aa looks fantastic, nice that everything grinds to a halt for the day as well.

Ah, Hen Gen, I still remember Dark Brown Egg's description of the Up Helly Aa festival when she visited there. Her descriptions and photos were so full of life, you could tell how much she had enjoyed it.
 
So do I now you’ve referred to her. Her black and white striped bus was the talk of the island for 5 minutes.
My favourite recollection of her visit to these parts was when she drove to the embarkation point for the ferry to the island of Foula and enquired of the ferry man whether they were fully booked or whether there was space for her bus on the ferry. His response of
“ no, but we could put the ferry on your roof rack and float over to the island” struck me as very funny at the time.

I loved reading about Dark Brown Eggs and TheBus. She was so adventurous as by that time her health an mobility weren't good.
