Before you buy chicks...

Post by Poultrykeeper Admin » Thu Jun 18, 2009 1:47 pm

If you are thinking of buying chicks or young growers, unless you are buying an autosexing breed (where the colour / markings of day old chicks is different between male and female), then it is notoriously difficult to sex them.

Vent sexing is possible but is difficult. In commercial establishments, they employ 'vent sexers' who spend much of their time doing just this. Even then, they don't get 100% success rates.

If you plan to buy chicks, you may end up with more cockerels than hens. Good breeders will normally exchange these for you or offer a refund if they were sold as guaranteed females. Chicks can normally be sexed acurately when the boys start to develop wattles and combs around 7 to 10 weeks of age (this varies alot with the breed).

Sadly, things don't always work out, so please be cautious when buying chicks (if you want to end up with hens) and try to get something in writing from a seller that they will exchange them or refund you if you end up with cockerels rather than hens, an email is ideal for this.

I hope advertisers on this forum will be fair and reasonable with buyers. We are not involved in the transaction between buyers and sellers and cannot be held responsible for any inaccuracies in posts or disputes.
