What happens at a Show?

Post by brahma » Mon Apr 19, 2010 9:44 pm

Sorry - another show question!! How are birds judged at a show? Does the judge get the bird out of the show pen and handle it or does he make it walk up and down in the pen? I would really like to show a couple of my birds but they are a bit flighty and I'm worried that they might "do a runner" if a judge gets them out of the pen.

Many thanks,

the judge judges the birds to the breed standard, he judges the bird for type in the pen and then takes it out to check for defaults etc . the birds should be clean and well presented.
The judge is experienced in handling birds so dont think your birds will run off, the best thing to do is to pen train them by puttng them in a pen for a few days and hand feeding, and handling them etc.

yorkshirepekin is quite correct, some breeds are more flighty than others, the judges handle them well,a steward is also there.Doubt a bird would escape whilst being judged, putting them in the pen at the start of the show, and removing at the end is another matter. One of my cockerels went for a wander round, checking out the hens when I was er boxing him up  .

Morning All,

I went to my first ever poultry show as an exhibitor at the weekend. Had a really great day!!
Really interesting watching the judges and stewards at work and the skillfull way in which the birds - some of which were quite flighty - were handled. I also leant alot aboout handling etc (as I am a bit on the new side to all this!!). Everyone also is so friendly!! (or was it that they were helping the new girl!!!!) Help and advice pouring from all directions - my guys were thankfully beautifully behaved and actually appeared to enjoy the experience so coming home with some prizes was most gratifying!! Roll on the next show!!!
