Splayed legs

Postby belleisa » Thu May 18, 2017 9:53 pm

I have just hatched 8 chicks and 3 have splayed legs.
One is not too bad and i think i can tape them into place, but what is the ideal age to,do this as it is now still, under 24 hours old.
The other two the legs are facing forward and they cant stand up at all so think i might need to cull them.
The chicks are mixed straight and frizzle pekins, so i have a feeling their is a genetic problem with in the parents.
I have not yet contacted the breeder to ask, not too sure if i should really.
Any suggestions i would appreciate.
I tried adding a picture but cant make it small enough but will try again.

My latest Pekins are now about 4 weeks old. One of them had badly splayed legs, and of course I did not think she would survive, eating, drinking etc.
She was very bright, it was a big hatch, and I saw her right in the middle of a bunch of them launch herself when upright at the food and drink! How clever is that? She survived and after a couple of days was upright, the will to live in her was tantamount.

This year Marigold I have hatched 6 beautiful Croad girls, who are growing fast, makes my flock up to 11.

I tried to reply last night but my reply wouldnt post.

Last night i followed the advice given on that web page, thank you Marigold.
Today 2 of them are up on their feet.
The 3rd ones plaster came undone so have done it again.
Am going to leave them in place a few days as suggested.

I have managed to correct the legs of 2 of the chicks so all good.
But sadly today i had to cull the 3rd one as it made no progress and was chirping constantly.
But checking its wings i am sure it was a boy.

Well done! At least the survivors have a companion. Any ideas on their sex?
