Re: Fox attack

How annoying. Bet she was one of your best hens too because that is the Law of Sod. Foxes never seem to take the old lazy ones that you intended despatching anyway.

Re: Egg Thief, Too Cocky For Its Own Good

Quite a few years ago I invested in a set of different sized fake eggs to use to encourage broodiness. The bantam sized ones were all stolen by magpies within a couple of days. Bet they weren't so happy when they tried to eat them!

Hi, have between 60 - 70 birds, split into breeding and laying pens. My back lawn is currently covered in pekin chicks!

Re: Feather loss and red skin

Chicken skin turns red when exposed to the air, it is normal, doesn't mean it is sore. Would agree it is most likely to be feather pecking at this time of year rather than moulting. You say the area feels swollen? Does the hen feel quite heavy? It may be that she is a little overweight.

Hello from North Norfolk

Thank you Marigold for steering me in the right direction ......

Hi, I'm a refugee from PP forum too. Live in North Norfolk not far from the sea. Keep lots of different poultry - chickens, turkeys, geese - and a few pigs. Looking forward to getting to know you all. :)
