Re: Talk about as rare as hens' teeth!

It also can be incredibly hard to get hold of the Marriages (or Heygates) medicated pellets if you don't live near a licensed stockist. Up here in North Norfolk there are no local stockists licensed to sell the medicated pellet, even though they can sell normal Marriages layers pellet. I have to dri...

Re: Guinea Pigs (Cavys)

I love guinea pigs. I have several here, taken in over the years as "rescue"/unwanted pets. They are so characterful. My favourite colour is brown agouti.
Good luck with the project HG.

Weather!

Hope not too many of you were washed away in yesterday's heavy rain? It really poured here and coupled with the high winds driving the rain into all the crevices the birds were none too happy. I even found a turkey stag sheltering in an old pig ark, and turkeys NEVER go inside, they sit out in every...

Re: Optimum hen house ramp angle?

You could do away with the ramp altogether and just put a sturdy log (standing on end) or block on the ground in front of the pop hole. They will hop onto that and then into the house from there. I have this arrangement with a couple of my houses.

Re: Soft shelled eggs

Hi everybody, I hope to ger our new girls later this week. We are looking forward to having hens in the garden again. Marigold suggested getting Red Spot to put in their water. That arrived last week, but the doses are in metric which I'm not very good at!! The dosage is 1ml in a litre of water. Ho...

Re: Guinea fowl advice please

He certainly sounds stressed. You say getting another GF is not an option, is any other bird an option, eg a chicken? If you are not keen to keep any birds any more then the solution would indeed be to rehome him asap.

Re: new to this

How many chicks are you hoping to hatch? Remember half will be cockerels. Do you have plans for those? Don't expect to be able to rehome them all, most people don't want other people's spare cockerels unless they are excellent examples of pure breeds, and even then they will be lucky to find a home....

Re: Gad the flies!

Red Tops are great, but yes they do stink! Amazing though when you do empty them, just full of beautiful irridescent fly carapaces. Like a mini jewellery mound. I don't fuss much about flies, they do break down the muck which would be around longer if they didn't, and provide the hens with another s...
