Re: Cankers- how should we treat them?

Oh poor you & chickens. How sad, but at least you have the knowledge that eggs dont carry it so you dont loose the new generations. People never tell you how heartbreaking keeping chooks can be, but its another chink closed in your armour of knowledge and we all know you'll give them your best love ...

Large Fowl V Bantam - required conditions

Went to the Devon Fanciers Show in Dawlish last weekend and met Andy Marshall (swoon) who was judging. Totally fell in love with the Cochins and am seriously considering the possibility of keeping 3 alongside my pekins. They are sooo lovely and not sure why they appeal more than the Orpingtons or Br...

Re: Winter greens

Basic white cabbage for my pekins. I cut it in half so they can get started and four pekins will devour a whole one in a couple of days :) they don't seem to like sprouts or tough savoys though

Re: Fun digging a hole

Nothing like digging big holes to keep a chicken happy. Decided that lavender pekins (Nancy now Lily) are inbuilt to dig. Lily has just discovered that there is soil under the 7 inches of woodchip and is digging for Australia :D

Re: Ears blocked with gunge - mite or respiratory?

I'd try the ivermectin again, but if shes sneezing or gasping & wheezing when she breaths (listen to her back with your ear against her) then probably respiratory. As with all chicken ailments, its a process of elimination of all home treatable suspects first and as you've already got a (nearly) pro...

Re: Will the fox outside my chicken run traumatise the chick

I agree with Marigold, the less fussy a coop the better as anything with lots of cracks and crevices or a felt roof over hard board are a haven for mite. I have a woodern ark that is now sold by omelet https://www.omlet.co.uk/shop/chicken_keeping/boughton_chicken_coop/ with a home made run to double...

Re: Will the fox outside my chicken run traumatise the chick

I live in a rural location where foxes are numerous so we're unable to get rid of them. Until we moved in, foxes used our lawn for sunbathing regularly. We have a dog and also electric fencing around the run. The foxes soon learned that it wasn't a good place to be and we only get occasional visits ...
