Re: Broody questions

fab - thanks guys. I did dose her with ivermectin before she went in the box and spray the broody box (no red mite history in flock either - fingers crossed). I may give her a dustebath for 10 mins just to keep her happy, but not sure if 20 mins twice a day to eat is good, as all the books and advic...

Broody questions

Hi all, Not been on for a while, but proud to announce that my baby pekin Tak, is going to be a mum (I HOPE) in 15 days :) Got a few questions about my broodie that I'm hoping someone can help with. She's in a flowerpot in a broody coop with 8 eggs, she is taken off the nest at the same time each ev...

Re: locking chickens out of the house

No idea if fox came by, but she said it was on its side on the floor with one foot tucked in tight and other stretched out under the outdoor perch. Possibly heart attack I'd say. Very sad whatever happened. Does make me worry though if it was stress, as I lock my Perkins out of the house regularly w...

locking chickens out of the house

Can you kill a healthy chicken in lay by locking it out of the house - a friend has chickens and locked them out of the house in error this morning - went home at lunchtime to find one dead on the floor. If not ill etc, can the stress of not being able to get in the house to lay make it die? Mine la...

Torn nostril

Poor old Lily is in the wars. She seems to have somehow managed to tear the delicate rim to her nostril on something when digging in the woodchip. Her nostril now seems to be blocked by what I presume is mud as she's still digging, but not sure if nostrils bleed (as they are hard). I have cleaned he...

Re: Batt in Business

I have to say I'm horrified at the condition of them even though they come out of the 'improved' farming system :( just glad I dont eat eggs or contribute to the ongoing welfare issue of these poor hens. Good on you (and everyone else) that makes room to give these lovely intelligent birds a chance ...

Re: All not happy in the Kimbab Flock

Flubenvet is the way to go - every 3 months - I do it Jan April July Oct. Some people do every 6 months, spring and autumn but mine free range and we have a lot of slugs (worm hosts) and wild birds in the garden. Vermex is only good as an "encouragement" for gut conditions to be unfriendly to worms ...

Re: Ears blocked with gunge - mite or respiratory?

They go in a large lidded plastic moving crate with a towel over the top to kep it dark but with good ventilation. they always go to the vet in the afternoon not the morning and have (so far) all been unstressed until they realis...
