Re: Chief Vet defends 750 sq.cms per caged hen

Yes it's an interesting argument he's got there isn't it. You could easily extend it to humans. The welfare benefits of putting humans in solitary confinement in a 6 x 6 cell could be enormous. You would cut down on diseases, they wouldn't die in car crashes or by falling down the stairs etc, perhap...

Re: Is eating commercial chicken bad for your sperm count?

The same way I would imagine Marigold, just with more staff stimulating more cock birds and inseminating more hens. If you imagine a production line of cocks, hens, extractors and inseminators you can produce an awful lot of fertile eggs. One sperm harvest from a cock will in theory produce 140 chic...

Re: Is eating commercial chicken bad for your sperm count?

Let's hope so, way too many people crammed onto this planet already. The reason no research has been done on this specifically is probably because they are still looking into a gazillion other potential causes which are higher up the list. Millions of people out there don't have the luxury of choosi...

Re: chicktec egg wash

I leave them alone and wipe them immediately before I cook them with a wet cloth/kitchen towel if they have some muck on them, if you feel happier using disinfectant than fair enough but it isn't necessary.

Re: Underweight chicken

Sorry to hear your news Rick. They can indeed soldier on for a fair period of time, often alternating between looking ill and then perking up for while.

Re: Impaction

Nothing you can do if it is further down Rick, I would work on the assumption that it is impacted crop just in case. Massage the crop and feed an oil of your choice, it's all you can do really.

Re: Nearly out for the Count.

He seems absolutely fine today Lady A, thanks for asking. Still got a bluish comb but that is nothing unusual with regards to him. As promised here are some photos of Nitwit, who is a cross between the Count (Orloff) and one of the Silver Sussex, he has inherited their wattles and his dads comb. He ...

Re: Nearly out for the Count.

He's a big lad, bigger than his dad and a bit more mobile but the Count is looking very bedraggled at the moment, had he moulted quickly he may have been ok but it has dragged on and he is looking a shadow of himself at the mo. Will get some photos of the two of them and post them up.
