Re: Turkeys and Chickens together?
Hi Zo, the usual recommendation is to keep turkeys and chickens separate but many people do keep them together for practical reasons. If you do, I suggest you worm them (and the chickens) very regularly to reduce the blackhead risk, and keep medication in stock so you can treat any immediately if th...

Re: Hanging, plucking, drawing...
Length of time hanging depends on a few things so it can vary. Age of the bird and temperature come to mind. If the temp is over about 8 degrees, best not hang too long. Having said that, the bird will keep longer if intact, so if you dont have a fridge to keep it in after drawing, it's probably bet...

Re: Hanging, plucking, drawing...
Pretty much like a chicken - you need to be careful along the strip of fat on the breast and there are the usual difficult bits on the thigh and wing where it is all too easy to tear the skin. I always pluck ours warm, straight after killing. I have never done one cold, and imagine it will be hard w...

Re: HELP PLEASE! poorly turkey
Did the first one die? If so, a PM would have been useful. Did you check out their poo to see if it was yellow/green? Did the vet ask about symptoms before giving you the meds? If they are making rattly breathing noises, they could have a micoplasma infection and may need an anti-biotic. Also, I bel...

Re: HELP PLEASE! poorly turkey
Talk to your vet. It could be anything, but if it has watery bright yellowish/greenish poo, it probably has blackhead and needs immediate treatment.

Re: Turkeys with Chickens
Howdy Y'all, I was wondering if it is safe to keep turkeys with chickens. (Not together as in the same coop or pen, but in the same yard near each other.) I heard that turkeys can spread diseases to chickens quite easily. :-)99 -Chicken Chaser Actually, it is chickens that can carry the blackhead p...

Re: Poorly Turkey
Hi Susie, fluffing up is a sure sign that a bird is unwell, but is not diagnostic of anything in particular. Take her to a poultry vet if you have one locally, or at least take a fresh poo sample for analysis. An infection or poisoning could give her a drunken walk, but so could many other things.

Re: Stringy birds ....
Unless your chickens are very old, they should roast fine if cooked long and slow. We never cook a chicken for less than 3 hours and then it is rested for maybe 30-40 mins during which time it continues to cook....

Re: Stringy birds ....
I am astonished that you would even consider boiling a turkey! We slow roast them and they are absolutely tender and moist with the meat falling off the bone. We blast them at full heat for 25 mins and then turn the heat down to 120 degrees centigrade until they are obviously cooked enough to fall a...

Sorry, but they are only available as breeding pairs, or I will be left with surplus drakes.
