Re: Egg question/general health

I stole the idea of the damp mash from you ages ago, Marigold ;-) I recall you saying your hens liked it in winter. Mine seem to love it like that and I know they have a full crop at night as they gobble it up. Not sure about Barbie, as she had the sniffles and sneezes for nearly 2 weeks, plus the r...

Re: Egg question/general health

I agree, Marigold, I told my husband that pellet is the best way, as there is less mess and less waste, too. They have a feeder in their downstairs run, which they have access to when they go in at night and early morning when they get up (bearing in mind they don't get let out until 7am). This feed...

Re: Egg question/general health

Just jumping back to this post, rather than start a new one. Miss Muffet, the "Bluebell" and Mabel, the RIR x Maran always lay small eggs. I believe the hens are around 5 months old now. As they are much larger birds than my ex-batt's, I expected their eggs to be large, but they are very small in co...

Re: This is for Barbie and Cindy

My last three ex- batts from the BHWT let me pick them up for a cuddle within 48 hours. They're just so friendly! My two let me pick them up, but the "posh birds" are quite aloof, especially Mabel, the rhode island red x maran. The bluebell one is a bit nervous. Gimme those ex batt's any day. :-)

Re: This is for Barbie and Cindy

Ahhhh, this is so sad, yet so lovely, as they all found new homes. Barbie and Cindy were not in such poor condition as these. They came from a barn, but had not seen proper daylight. The first time it rained, they sprinted under a bush, it was quite funny to see. In some ways, I wish I had rescued a...

Re: Chronic Respiratory Disease?

Hi Marigold It's lovely for you to ask about Barbie. I tend to be a little quiet during the week as I work full time, then do a long bike ride in the evening, so check for any new posts and then watch Corrie/Emmerdale on catch-up TV, then bedtime..... Barbie seem to be getting over whatever it was. ...

Re: Chronic Respiratory Disease?

Hi all Yes she does seem OK in herself, so maybe it is some irritant in her nasal package as Marigold and you suggested. I could not believe my eyes tonight... I always leave them to go into their coops, bearing in mind I have two separate coops at either end of the attached pen and two little stair...

Re: Chronic Respiratory Disease?

HI Marigold I can't hear that croaky noise now, either. Well spotted. Also, I hadn't realised that she laid an egg early this morning. The reason I hadn't discovered it, was due to Miss Muffet being sat on the nest laying hers when I looked in at 7.30am. Ten minutes ago I popped the door open and sa...
