Re: Squirrel Lasagne

Durian is truly revolting IMHO. It smells like a gas leak. Ugghh. Cuttlefish is something else that I can't recommend. It's like eating refrigerated cartilidge, as far as the texture goes. I've also suffered a particular Chinese variety of fermented tofu that smells & tastes of horse manure; the sm...

Re: Squirrel Lasagne

Rick, you could try Durian fruit! My brother tells me that it smells so utterly foul that you're not allowed bring it on public transport where he lives! But it's very popular in those parts of the world that it's native to.

Re: Squirrel Lasagne

I had rattlesnake once - just so that I could always say that I had! When we lived in NM, a friend of ours killed a huge one. He said "I ran over it in my truck. Had to run over it about six times, before I killed it!" So, being a sort of outdoorsy type, he cooked it. Waste not, want not and all tha...

Re: Cat ladders

They are very cool. My big tom isn't able to climb very well at all, so it would be a no-go for him. He's very clumsy, and would be bound to fall! And the little female would just love it! But she's not trustworthy. She'd take a short-cut down by just jumping, as her depth perception isn't good. Bes...

It was quite early on, when they were getting set up with their self sufficiency.

Re: Time to say goodbye to this batch. :(

Remember that scene in "The Good Life" where the husband went out to kill a chicken with a pistol, and missed completely? And then, there's the (true) story of the chicken that a farmer botched beheading with an axe. He missed the brain stem, and that bird lived without its head for around two years...

Re: Time to say goodbye to this batch. :(

Now, so long as they have quality of life, we keep them. After all, neither I nor my husband produce eggs, but we're not ready to be euthanised yet! I freely admit to being a bit soft. Guilty as charged, mi'lud... I used to keep all the oldies until they became ill. But (apart from not having an ex...

Re: Time to say goodbye to this batch. :(

because they couldn't keep up being commercial super egg layers indefinitely! That's the thing. And I have to say, this batch have been absolutely amazing. I've had them almost two years, and they were all laying every day when I got them, so I reckon they are at least 2 1/2. And until the last few...

Re: Time to say goodbye to this batch. :(

Well, I supply dau & her family with eggs, and both they and I eat a lot of eggs! Dau & family easily get through 18/24 a week. The hens I have have all gone through a moult this Winter - some a long, slow moult, and one a "pillow fight" moult that saw her walking around almost oven ready for a whil...
