Re: Poultry mite invasion in my garden and house

No you are not on your own and we all intrigued and we accept it as part and parcel of life and don't freak out. We googled book lice fascinating, but damn annoying if you have an invasion. Hope you get it sorted soon.
Weird isn't it how we all start scratching when you read anything like this

Re: The skinflinting Thread!

Nothing wrong with charity shops, we have bought some lovely things from them, lovely pine table for the kitchen complete with 6 chairs £30. OH got a hat for her brothers 3rd wedding £2.50 a couple of years ago to name but a few. When the m in law died just before Christmas we brought home a wall un...

Re: Dithering...good or bad sign?

I think hybrids will be better also at the start, you can branch out later once "morehens" disease strikes. You have the set up, you have researched keeping hens so go for it. You will soon wonder how you managed without them and you will also be giving the children the insight into animal lives als...

Re: nature notes

These get brought into the nature reserve by slightly hysterical people convinced they are going to poison/kill their children and eat the house. Even when shown they will turn into something quite lovely they wont take them back, and they have to be re-homed. You should see my lot at the yard when ...

Re: What are these??

That seems likely if they are laying on their sides. Lots of pig shelters in Norfolk have green coloured backs and are made of metal. If thats the case, that will be one very muddy field soon. Do keep us posted

Re: nature notes

OH uses Xeno Canto a lot, it's easy once you get the hang of it and brilliant when someone wants to know what a bird sounds like. The caterpillars of the Elephant hawk moth are pretty impressive, so are the Emperor moths, especially as they have 3 colour phases. They had a Deaths Head Hawk Moth at R...

Re: What are these??

No idea, looks as though it is to contain something. Obviously not growing anything in as you say they have a lid on. Unless something is going to be put in it later, I note they are all equally spaced. never seen anything like it on the farmland around here, or anywhere else. Things for making crop...

Re: nature notes

Isn't that just the best bit about about nature, you never stop learning. There is always something new to discover. Had a huge moth on the side of one of our buses at the depot the other day. Lovely camouflage colours, apart from the fact it was on the side of a blue/silver bus. Looked it up when I ...

Re: Integrating new pullets

We or rather OH has a similar set up, two runs next to each other divided with mesh and a door that can be hooked back once the new hens and old hens have got used to each other works well with just the minimum of fisticuffs. Usually the old girls are far too busy investigating the area and coop the...
