Re: introducing chickings

I kept 4 ducks for a few years in my youth. They had a duck house and free ranged in a large orchard and had access to a river. Unfortunately, one day they all disappeared and I assumed that they had been taken by a fox. A few years ago I tried again. We knew we had foxes and so first kept them in a...

Re: red mite

This is very strong stuff. Having read its Safety Data Sheet I would not advise using this product in a small chicken house. It is for use by trained professionals only. Before you use it I suggest you find out if it will it react with the other red mite products that you have been using and how lon...

Re: incubation question please

If the 2 chicks are active and dry move them to the brooder now and leave the other 5 eggs in the incubator for a couple more days to give them a chance to hatch.

Re: cock advise

If you are going to breed from your hens you should have at least two hens with each cockerel and I think it would be kinder to the hens to have a ratio of one cockerel to at least six hens. I normally incubate up to a dozen eggs a year in the hope that I am able to replace a few of my older hens. A...

Re: chicken feed amount

I have 16 fully grown hens and they don't eat quite that much. I get through just over 12kg of pellets a week. I have two 9kg Grandpas feeders which are definitely rat and crow proof. I agree that something else much be eating your pellets and would recommend getting a Grandpas feeder, They are quit...

Re: Introducing new girls to our single ex-batt

If you do clip the flight feathers as Rick suggests I would like to point out that you trim one wing only as it will defeat the object if you trim both as the chicken will still be balanced and able to fly. I have never heard of the method of trimming just one feather, but don't imagine that one les...

Re: egg attacks

In the past I have had a crows take eggs. As I could not work out where the eggs were going because there was no signs in the nestbox I set up a camcorder and I have film of a crow flying in through the pop hole and flying off with the hens egg in its beak. I use Grandpas feeds so that no vermin can...
