Re: cockerel's comb gone floppy

Thank you all. He has gradually gone downhill and looks really miserable so sadly a friend is going to dispatch him today - unless anyone has further suggestions

Re: cockerel's comb gone floppy

Thanks very much for your advice and encouragement Chris. I'll try vaseline. He is not moulting and is not himself- very quiet and his eyes are pale. Its been terribly windy lately and some of the birds have had respiratory problems so it may be related to this, or perhaps he's anaemic for some reas...

cockerel's comb gone floppy

My 4-year old cockerel's comb has gone floppy with the floppy bits discoloured (slightly purple) in colour. He is eating and drinking well. Not sure what could be wrong with him?

Re: good article on red mite control

Well that is all fascinating. Thankyou Chris and Rick. Its also a fantastic article on poultrykeeper.com from Tim Daniels. I'm still not quite sure, if I put the shavings on a distant compost heap, how this might affect the wild bird population? Apparently they hide in the gaps in tree bark if they ...

Re: good article on red mite control

Thanks Marigold. Very interesting contributions. I didn't know about red stop solution, and interesting I could try a steam cleaner on the houses, which Rick suggested, and that diatomaceous earth should be painted on. What a helpful forum this is. I tried torching today and set my jacket alight wit...

Re: free range cockerel moving to small space

Thank you Rick and Marigold for your helpful replies. I should have mentioned my beautiful speckled sussex is 18 months old, so even more difficult for him to adapt to a small space at this age. He is glorious, gentlemanly with the hens and non-aggressive should anyone else be interested!

good article on red mite control

I think there was a 'guidance' section on the forum on management of various poultry things, but I'm not quite sure how to get to it? I've got red mite in some of my houses and am looking to find the best way of dealing with it. Not had them before.

free range cockerel moving to small space

Someone wants to buy one of my young Speckled Sussex bantam cockerels who has been used to a big run 10 x 8 metres. I've asked to see a photo of where he would live with two hens and it is not more than 1m x 2m. I presume he would be unhappy moving to a small space and that I need to turn the home d...

curly feathers

A number of my birds' feathers have gone curly around the neck this year. Not sure if its due to the hot weather we had or perhaps a trace element deficiency or some other cause. The hens are all well. Has anyone else had the same?
