Just wanted to pop on & say thanks you so much to everyone who commented & gave advice at the weekend re my poorly girl. We kept her in over night on the first day & returned her to the flock the next morning keeping a close eye on them all through the day. She slowly improved to eating & drinking b...

Re: Scraps or no scraps, which is best?

Thanks Marigold (again!) I only really want to give them 'good' stuff like the outer leaves of the cauliflower, veggie peelings/tops or fruit. I got them some mixed corn as a treat today & they went mad for it (just a handful a day!) Think I'll give them the fruit & veg stuff as I really can't see h...

Re: Scraps or no scraps, which is best?

REALLY??? Oh! I'm really surprised. Is that even for 'pet' hens ie only using Eggs for your own household? or for people who sell eggs on or use them in products they sell to the public?

Re: Scraps or no scraps, which is best?

Thanks Chuck :o) We have quite a little amount of food waste considering we're a family of 6! But I'd just like to give them a little variety but Like Cherrycoup was wondering if there are things they shouldn't have? Would never feed them meat but are all fruits & veggies ok? Is there anything that ...

Scraps or no scraps, which is best?

Hello, I'm a newby to keeping chickens & I'm finding the information on here so useful & the people very helpful. I know a few people that keep Chickens & have had conflicting advice about feeding the girls our scraps. Some seem to give their girls all sorts of leftovers including past, rice veggies...

Re: Tail Down, sleepy young hen

Thanks Marigold. Their run is about half of the back of our garden, so very spacious & the house is huge! When I looked at pictures of ones to buy it said one like ours was suitable for upto 24 hens! (4 is plenty for us!) I don't know their exact age. A farmer my OH knows got them from the breeder h...

Re: Tail Down, sleepy young hen

Thanks Chuck. yes sorry, I do give them grit as well as baking egg shells & grinding them up. Hopefully they will settle down. I've put her back with the other hens. She's certainly no worse & she's at least standing today. Another hen seems to be keeping her company & we're making sure she drinks. ...

Re: Tail Down, sleepy young hen - update

OH Has been out into the Hen House. We have 3 eggs. 2 broken with very soft shells and one intact but shell very thin in places. I'm wondering if this is the girls just getting going with their egg laying as I'm pretty sure only one has laid so far & those eggs have been perfect. They were only just...

Re: Tail Down, sleepy young hen

I did check it yes, & it seems fine (to me, who is inexperienced! but it's not enlarged or bulky) Good news is she's still with us this morning. What she passed in the night is VERY white & dried like Tippex on the paper in her crate. She actually made little resentful clucking noises as I took her ...
