Making a damp warm mash at bedtime is a great idea, especially in winter when it helps keep them hydrated in freezing conditions. At 5 months, they most likely haven't reached maximum egg size yet. The mixed lot of 5 pullets I got this Spring must be 7-8 months by now, and I've been keeping individual daily egg weight records on this batch since they started lay.
