Re: Moulting

smite kills earwigs ... or certainly did when I used it for the first time at teh weekend (6% strong) But earwigs are good. They eat red mite and other mites in hen houses. Don't go killing them off if you can help it, especially in summer. I always used to fish a heap out of the corners of my hen ...

Re: Neck stretching - can it be normal, or is it gape worm?

TBH if its only occasional I'd not worry overly. My Pekins would often do this and all were fit and well and never suffered any problems with gape worm.

It does seem to be something Pekins tend to do, the neck stretching.

Re: A few questions:

If you have a good torch it'll do the trick for candling. Just ensure you look at the eggs in total darkness and hold the torch to one side, the far side from you and then look at the near side and you'll soon be able to see if anything is happening in the eggs.

Re: Bullied duckling!

I've not got much to suggest. Hopefully someone will be along with some suggestions. You did say about her still being fluffy and yellow. I am figuring this means she doesn't have her feathering through yet? If not, you are better to keep them under heat till its grown (and away from deep water etc ...

Re: got myself a broody

Its late in the year to use a broody. If it strikes them, they can and will give up sitting if the weather cools and nights draw in. If she has been broody a while she may still give up on sitting on eggs this time of year. Also she might not be in the best shape to sit for 3 weeks if she has been b...

Re: Garlic

I use garlic powder for horses. Buy it in tubs from feed merchants for about a fiver. Lasts a long time. I get a small scoop (like a coffee scoop or some such) and just then use 1 scoop of it mixed in the pellets in each feeder. You can use less but I give it all a good coating. Just ensure the feed...

Re: poultry forums in Europe

I suggest using a search engine (google will probably be best) and researching that way. We are mostly from the UK here, but some from overseas.

I personally stick only to this poultry forum. I do speak Dutch and some German but tbh I've no reason to post forums in other languages.

Good luck.

Re: Chickens not eating

You need the live yogurt for the bacteria. Chooks will probably peck away at this even if off their food. Syringing you need to take care in case it goes down the windpipe. If doing so, get it just inside the beak on the tongue so they can swallow it back themselves. I'd give them a chance to eat it...

Re: vets and chickens

You should find it at most decent pet stores or feed supply merchants. If it is cocci then don't delay. You really need to get a move on and start treatment as it can be fatal quickly and spread in the flock. It really is worth keeping a bottle of Coxoid in stock as a just in case thing. I always ha...
