How to spoil chickens

Popped into the supermarket yesterday, came back with 4 very large white cabbages and 2 cauliflowers just for the girls. Going by the last white cabbage I hung on a cord that lasted 2 days, because of the flu that they can't have the whole run we're feeding greens also.

The wife came up with a point about feeding, the supplier said when he see the size of the run that he would restrict the girls within the area that's covered (Defra rules) then when it was clear to let them out he would keep them in the main area where they have a large feeder of layer pellets.
Then would let them roam from about noon, the reason for this is letting them out they with not eat the layers which are needed for the eggs...they'll head out into the green areas.....thoughts on this please. ;)

I always used to let mine out in the morning and shut them in around 4pm. They would forage all day, but regularly came back to the run for a feed of pellets too.

Ditto LadyA, my birds would do the same as well. If you let them FR (free range) you must be aware of foxes. A halfway house is a large electrified netting pen which can be moved if you like.

One thing I always did with every batch of hens over the years was that, at about 5pm in Summer, and 2.30-3pm in winter, I gave them a small handful of mixed grain between them in the secure run. That way, they were trained to be safely back in the run long before dusk. Usually, they'd already be in the run, yelling at the back door for their supper well before I gave it to them!
